A one year contract worth $1.1 million was signed between the Houston Astros and Geoff Blum which includes incentives and a team option for 2009.

Blum is 34 years old and had played for the San Diego Padres last season. This is where he had batted .252 with five home runs and 33 RBI. Blum returned to Houston on entering his 10th season. He had last played for Houston in 2002 -2003 where he had batted .241 and 18 home runs with 87 RBI in 235 games in a two year span.

Ed Wade, the general manager of Astros is more than happy to have Blum in an Astros uniform as Blum is a versatile player who fills numerous defensive roles and can swing well. So far, Blum has appeared in all positions but as a catcher, pitcher and centre field in his baseball career.
