Minnesota Twins was approached by Hank Steinbrenner, the senior vice president of Yankees to obtain pitcher, Johan Santana. These talks are in the preliminary rounds, and are no secret.
Santana is a two time American League Cy Young award winner who will become a free agent after the 2008 season by earning $13.25 million in the year. This will make him eclipse the $126 million contract Barry Zito has with San Francisco Giants. However of late, the Twins have not been able to get Santana to sign a contract extension.
There are other teams also interested in Santana which are the Mets, Yankees, Dodgers and Red Sox. With the 93-44 record and 3.22 earned run average in Santana’s career, the Twins are looking for a package of young players like pitchers Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes.
