The Red Sox and starting pitcher Bartolo Colon have agreed to terms on a minor league contract and has been invited to spring training. The team’s medical staff will evaluate this 2005 Cy Young Award winner and if added to the Red Sox, he would get a $1.2 million, one year contract and will have the opportunity to earn performance and roster bonuses.
The two-time All-Star has gone 7-13 with a 5.72 ERA. But he was slowed down by his elbow and shoulder injuries the past two seasons. During his final year of the four year $51 million deal, he went 6-8 with a 6.34 ERA with the Los Angeles Angels last season.
Colon has pitched 31 complete games, ranking 16th among active players as of the end of 2006. He has gone 146-95 with a 4.10 ERA for the Expos, White Sox, Indians and Angels since 1994 and he is expected to start a throwing program immediately.
