First baseman of the Brewers, Prince Fielder, renewed his contract terms with the team.
Fielder will make $670,000 this season. However, Fielder is not happy about the terms. The reason for his unhappiness is that, according to Fielder many other players having the same Major League Service time as he does are getting paid much more even though they are doing much less!
Fielder finished seventh in NL Rookie of the Year balloting in 2006. Last season, in every category, he considerably improved his offensive production. Fielder became the youngest player to lead the NL with 50 home runs. He finished third in MVP balloting.
Teams have to negotiate contract terms even though it owns the rights for the first six years of the player. When both parties cannot agree to terms, players having zero to three years of Major League service will renew the contract at the salary of choice. According to assistant GM Gord Ash, the system compensates each player according to his performance. However, this might not always be agreeable terms for the players.
